Nach dem Abitur betrieb Rainer Bock in seiner Heimatstadt ein Café, in dem es auch ein Kleinkunstprogramm gab. Nach dem Schauspiel-Studium an einer privaten Schauspielschule in Kiel debütierte er 1982 als Theaterschauspieler an den Bühnen der Landeshauptstadt Kiel. Über das Schleswig-Holsteinische Landestheater kam er nach Heidelberg und ans Nationaltheater Mannheim. Am Staatstheater Stuttgart hatte er von 1995 bis 2001 ein Engagement.
