Après un passage à la Rue Blanche, Yann Collette crée en 1978 avec le metteur en scène Pierre Pradinas le théâtre du Chapeau Rouge en Avignon. Un an plus tard, il fait ses débuts au cinéma dans Le Gagnant.
Son physique décalé, son oeil de verre et crâne chauve servent à merveille l'univers d'Enki Bilal avec lequel il collabore en 1989 avec Bunker Palace Hotel puis en 1996 dans Tykho Moon. Cette "gueule" du cinéma français excelle dans les seconds rôles sombres, de personnages retors et violents
